Can You Smoke Weed Stems

Can You Smoke Weed Stems?

Do you have a jar full of cannabis stalks and stems? If you've been using cannabis for a while and get yourself weed sub boxes, you probably have accumulated quite a collection. Whether you've stored them for weeks, months, or even years, you might be unsure about what to do with these cannabis stems. Technically, you can smoke them, but is it advisable? No, it's not worth it. Smoking weed stems is unlikely to produce any psychoactive effects because they contain very few, if any, trichomes – the small structures responsible for the majority of cannabinoids and terpenes in the marijuana plant. Additionally, they are known to have a very unpleasant taste.

And there’s more to it.

How Smoking Marijuana Stems Can Affect You

Smoking weed stems may lead to uncomfortable side effects, and the minimal THC content in the stems doesn't outweigh the risks and unpleasant consequences associated with smoking.

Inhaling any type of smoke poses a threat to your lungs, whether it's from bud, seed, tobacco, or burning wood. Combustion releases toxins and carcinogens, contributing to lung damage and increasing the risk of cancer, heart issues, and lung diseases.

Apart from the general effects of smoking, smoking weed stems can result in:

  • Intense headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Persistent coughing

Additionally, the experience is likely to have a taste reminiscent of smoking wood chips. Individuals sharing their experiences on platforms like Reddit and other forums have also reported discomforting gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea and abdominal pain after smoking pot stems.

Smoking Marijuana Seeds: Also Not a Good Idea

No, you shouldn't smoke marijuana seeds that come in your weed subscription box either.

Regardless of how many you crush and smoke, marijuana seeds won't get you high. The seeds simply lack sufficient THC content to induce any effects at all.

Burning them will result in snap, crackle, and pop, accompanied by acrid smoke that can irritate your throat and harm your lungs. Similar to other types of smoke. However, beyond these effects, smoking pot stem seeds won't offer any additional benefits.

Alternatives to Throwing Your Pot Stems and Seeds Away

You don't have to discard stems and seeds altogether, even if they're not suitable for smoking. There might still be some practical uses for these leftovers, depending on the quantity you have.

If you only have a few seeds, planting them could be a potential option, allowing you to try growing your own stash (assuming it's legal in your area). For those with a lot of stems and seeds from their weed box sub, consider the option of incorporating them into your diet. We might have some very good ideas for that.

Brew A Pot of Weed Stem Tea

Using weed stems is made simple by brewing them into tea. Unlike traditional edibles that take a while to kick in, weed stems tea provides fast-acting effects. You can usually feel it within a few minutes, depending on certain factors.

Here's what you'll need to make the tea:

  • A few teaspoons of weed stems
  • 3 cups of boiling water
  • Cheesecloth or a coffee filter
  • Saucepan
  • Fat-rich milk (dairy or non-dairy)

How to prepare weed stem tea:

  • Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in your saucepan.
  • Add the marijuana stems to the boiling water along with your preferred milk.
  • Once it reaches a boil, remove from heat and stir occasionally for 7-10 minutes.
  • Strain the tea using a coffee filter or cheesecloth.

Your tea is ready to drink!

To enhance its potency, consider increasing the amount of milk used. Since milk is rich in fat, cannabinoids bind well to it. Boosting the fat content maximizes the bioavailability of cannabinoids, making your pot stem tea more potent.

Make Your Own Cannabutter with Weed Stalks

Cannabutter, also known as cannabis butter, is a widely used infusion of butter with cannabis. It can be effortlessly created using weed stalks, following a process similar to making weed stems tea.

To prepare cannabis butter, gather the following ingredients:

  • A few tablespoons of weed stalk
  • ½ cup of coconut oil
  • Baking dish
  • Foil
  • Cheesecloth
  • Glass jar

How to make cannabis butter using weed stalks:

  • Preheat your oven to 215°F.
  • Once warmed, place a baking sheet with the stalks in the oven for 30 minutes.
  • After the time has elapsed, remove the baking sheet from the oven and set the marijuana stems aside.
  • Pour coconut oil into a pan and heat it until it becomes liquid.
  • Mix the stems into the oil, using a spoon to mix it thoroughly.
  • Cover the mixture with foil and place the pan in the oven for 1.5 hours, stirring halfway through.
  • After the time has passed, remove the pan from the oven and let it cool.
  • Once cooled, place cheesecloth over your glass jar and pour the coconut oil mixture through the cloth to strain the stems.

You now have a glass jar filled with weed stem cannabis butter.

The crucial step in this process is decarboxylation or getting decarb stems, which takes place when the weed stems are placed in the oven on a baking sheet. This converts acidic cannabinoids into active forms, making them capable of producing a high.

Be cautious when consuming cannabutter, as it is highly potent and may take some time for its effects to set in. Always wait 1-2 hours before considering additional doses to prevent a potentially unpleasant experience.

Hash from Weed Stems

The goal is to extract the hash from the weed stems by separating the trichomes from less pure parts of the branches.

Trichomes, also known as kief, can be collected over time if you've ever used a high-quality grinder. This type of grinder sifts the ground-up weed through a mesh screen with each shake, collecting kief.

To remove trichomes from weed stems and create a hash, make the individual trichomes as brittle as possible and induce a shaking motion to get them to fall off the stems.

How to make hash from weed stems:

  • Place your weed stems into a sealed plastic bag.
  • Put the bag in the freezer for 10 minutes.
  • After ten minutes, take the bag out and shake it for 30 seconds to encourage trichomes to fall off the stems.
  • Return the bag to the freezer and repeat the freeze and shake process until you observe a brown/green powder buildup at the bottom of the plastic bag.
  • Once you have a powder buildup at the bottom, you've successfully made hash!

You can press your kief/trichome hash to make it more portable or keep it in powder form to sprinkle into a joint.
